It's no secret that folks in Haliburton have a love/hate relationship with our many lakes and rivers. They bring us joy and delight, but also heartbreak. In 2013, 2016, 2017, 2019, and this year in 2026, localized flooding has caused devastating damage to many areas in the county, but especially the town of Minden.
In 2016, Jim Love released his album Highland Lullaby. On it was included the song "Carolyn and I", a love song about a couple who are stuck watching as the rising river waters flood the home they had built.
